What's one thing you know you could do to improve your health?
What a timely question for me personally. Since this is part of my growth process right now, I'm going to go ahead and be totally transparent about it. I just learned that all of my health issues--both serious and weird--could be resolved primarily by changing my diet and losing some weight. For the last ten years, I have been having serious troubles with my moon cycle (like having crazy pms but no cycle for months at a time!), as well as some funky skin issues. It never ceases to amaze me how much our hormones can put us girls out of whack physically and emotionally. I've seen more doctors than I can count and not one of them brought up the diagnosis I just received from my new provider at our very first meeting. Yet the condition is one of the most common in this area of women's health and exists in up to 10% of women! And I manifest every single symptom for it! I won't vent my frustration with the medical community here; but geez, why do we pay so much money for "expertise" that seems so hit and miss? I have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which oddly enough, increases insulin and testosterone production because eggs don't release properly. So both my moon issues and my weight issues (existing just the last six years) can be attributed to this condition, which can be managed by taking birth control pills to regulate my cycle until I lose weight, changing my diet to regulate my insulin on my own (instead of taking a diabetic insulin regulator), and losing weight (somehow the extra weight actually worsens the moon cycle problem).
This is what is so interesting to me...of course I've known that I need to address my weight issues, but I haven't been sure what would work right for my body as far as diet is concerned. Something inside of me knew there was more going on because when I've tried to cut calories I haven't lost a pound. When I stopped emotionally binge eating I didn't lose any weight. When I cut a lot of junk food out of my family's diet, I still didn't lose any weight. For me it isn't that I just need to eat better or less, I need to cut very specific things (no more potatoes...wah!) and make sure I'm getting my necessary carbs/sugars from specific foods.
I have to be honest here...I think psychologically this will be more of a motivation to lose weight, eat better, and exercise (walking & yoga) than I've ever had. See, I don't have any hang-ups about my beauty as a woman related to my weight. I worked through all that long before I put on the extra pounds, because I am a naturally big and tall girl who will never be skinny. I also had two children who gave me stretch-marks and droopy breasts and a soft belly, which I see as consequences to be proud of since mothering is the most important thing I've ever done or will do. So "looking better" has never been a motivation that would work for me. I was actually far more bothered by my weird skin issues -- which it turns out are caused by the excess insulin in my body. I'm also very healthy as far as my cholesterol and blood pressure and all those things are concerned. In fact, my doctor said she rarely sees lab work so good. So general health concerns weren't a motivation either. But changing my wacky moon cycle and the terrible effects it has on my life is a HUGE motivational factor.
I also find it interesting that this diagnosis has come at a time of life transformation for me, and after I have worked through much of my emotional eating problem. Now it's just another change towards a better life to be excited about.
Help

Being “excited,” as you describe it, has got to be an important factor for positive change. Good luck—-you're on your way.
Keep on trying! I will hold you in successful thought! There are so many behaviors in which we might apply our emotional needs to motivate us. Take power in your desire to make healthier choices, focus on the positive in all your efforts.
April, congratulations on your big discovery
I’ve learned a great deal over the past five years that’s allowed me to successfully shed weight without counting calories – I’m here if you’d like any info and/or support
B. C.,
My wife has polycystic ovary syndrome. She controls it by “going” organic and trying to control her ph level. (there is lots of info on the web). She uses organic cleaning supplies and even make-up. There are so many toxins hidden in our environment and you girls are so precariously balanced, I think there are alot of women out there that have a ton of symptons that can be attributed to this but they go undiagnosed. Now that you know the problem you can continue with your transformation. Success to you!
Bless your heart for going public and trusting and allowing the community here to support you energetically! So many women are struggling and looking for answers. I hope you continue to share what works for you and what doesn't. Your courage will make other women and their families feel less alone in their search for answers.
I am curious about the dietary changes and carbs. Will you be avoiding gluten from now on or something else?
Much love,
Shani
